Nome Mayor Denise Michels has withdrawn her name from the race for Lieutenant Governor. She was running in the Democratic Primary.
Michels says she found running for statewide office from Nome to be too big a task when combined with the importance of her Mayoral position and her job as Transportation Director for the Kawerak Corporation. She says she faced a very busy travel schedule in the next few weeks with her current positions – and she was running into too many conflicts with political activity.
Realizing I wouldn’t be able to do that, that’s when I had to sit down and be real, and look at … I’m not going to drop the commitments that I’ve already made for running for the Lt. Governor’s position. So those kind of issues is what I had to deal with.
Michels’ withdrawal leaves three other candidates on the primary ballot, Diane Benson, Lynette Moreno-Hinz, and Jack Powers – all from Anchorage.
